Due to myxoid degeneration (accumulation of ground substance) of the valve, making it floppy. -> Seen in 2-3% of US adults

Physical exam

  • C234 Physical Examination of the Cardiovascular System
  • Auscultation
    • Mid-late systolic click. High-pitched, crescendo-decrescendo.
    • Click and murmur become louder with valsalva or slow squatting (increased systemic resistance decreases left ventricular emptying).
    • As the severity of leaflet dysfunction and MR worsens, the murmur becomes holosystolic and the click may not be audible.

Treatment

Complications are rare, but include infectious endocarditis, arrhythmia, and severe mitral regurgitation.
